Markdown makes a great choice of formatting markup:
- It imitates plain text email
- It has a flexible syntax that allows you to do things in multiple ways
- It's easily discoverable. Many people use dashes and line-breaks to create plain text lists, or number their lines when creating an ordered list. Markdown taps into these behaviors, so folks who don't understand the concept of syntax still get a lot of benefit.
