The object of life is growth.
Growth is the act of transitioning from a creature that consumes and destroys to one that creates. Doing this is not an external act, but an internal process that causes external acts.
But enough of morality.
If the object of life is growth, than the goal of work -- a necessary part of life -- is to create worth. Notice I did not say create wealth, or make money. Wealth is an abstraction of the concept of worth, the key difference being, one may have wealth without creating it. Having wealth is like having a slice of pie. Creating worth is like baking pies.
Any creative work is requires a balancing of priorities. With limited time and resources no work can be perfect, only good enough. Yet, since the core object of work is to create worth, when striking balances and defending compromises, one should err on the side of worth. If through compromise you find you are no longer creating something of enduring worth, or even temporary worth, you are probably wasting your time.
