Since people Build Tribes, we connect most deeply with those who are in our immediate vicinity and the things within our circle of influence. However, the explosion of communications technology has enabled us to choose what is in our "immediate vicinity" and draw our own circle of influence.
Instant, free communication
...provided by the internet allows us to communicate in nearly real-time, bridging gaps of thousands of miles.
Drip, drip, drip
"Drip, drip, drip. Bloggers don't have to say everything at once. We can add a new idea every day, piling on a thesis over time." -- Seth Godin.
All relationships are built on communication. The best kind of communication to build a relationship is the kind you use everyday around your friend. No thesis, no motive, just little bits of personality: what's happening, what you care about, who you like. Over time these little bits and pieces build up into trust and care. Newsletters aren't like that. Books aren't like that. Movies aren't like that. Both have strengths, but they are different strengths. They are productions. They make fans, not friends.
Internet publishing can be like that. Nearly free publication and unlimited space to share means there is room to breathe: your production can be as small or as large as you want: there are no benefits to writing in bulk here. That means you can share who you are and what you care about in bits and pieces, just like you would in person.
The Web is Multimedia
The web is the most flexible medium around: text, audio, photo and video. Take your pick: each is the same price to publish as the other. All have their individual strengths.

The Vanderbilt Republic Foundation proves people want the story of the cause so badly, they are willing to pay for it.
