These are hybrids that mix business and making a difference. A charity-for-profit, or profit-for-charity.

  • Tom's Shoes gives away a pair of shoes for every pair bought to the needy in developing countries.
  • ProductRed partners with other organizations. Each organization creates a "red" version of their product, a portion of the profits which goes toward AI Ds? research and relief and development.

It turns out there is a name for this model: Social Enterprise. The core concepts:

  • Multiple bottom lines
  • Founded primarily for an other-than-profit or not-just-profit motive ("We don’t make movies to make money, we make money to make more movies." - Walt Disney)

Many are also employee-owned.
